Direct Thermal vs Thermal Transfer Labels for CNC Production

Direct thermal and thermal transfer are two different printing methods. Choosing the correct label starts with the way the installed printer or print engine is configured.

Direct thermal (DTL)

Direct thermal media uses a heat-sensitive face material and prints without a transfer ribbon. Choose DTL only when the installed equipment is configured for direct thermal printing.

Thermal transfer (TTL)

Thermal transfer media uses a ribbon to transfer the printed image to the label. Choose TTL when the installed printer is configured for ribbon-based thermal transfer printing.

What to confirm before ordering

  • Exact printer or print-engine model
  • Direct thermal or thermal transfer print method
  • Label face size and liner/media width
  • Core diameter
  • Inside or outside winding direction
  • Maximum roll diameter
  • Sensor and media-path configuration

Do not assume the print method from the production machine family alone. HOMAG CNC equipment and HOLZMA panel saws can be part of a labeling workflow, but the actual printer or print engine determines the media requirements.
